Dominican Republic participates in Global Forum on Family Farming at FAO

Rome.- The Dominican Republic has reaffirmed its commitment to the universal right to food and the sustainable development of family farming at the World Forum on Family Farming and the “Hand in Hand” Investment Forum, organized by FAO in Rome. The event was moderated by Ambassador Mario Arvelo, who emphasized the crucial role of family farming in global food security. Notable attendees included former President Hipólito Mejía, Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz, FAO Representative Rodrigo Castañeda, Irrigation Technology Director Claudio Caamaño, and Border Policies Director Erick Dorrejo.

During the forum, Minister Limber Cruz highlighted that family farming accounts for 80% of the food consumed in the Dominican Republic, making it essential for food security. He stressed the need to continue supporting small farmers by improving access to technology, markets, and financing. Cruz also pointed to investments in irrigation systems and rural infrastructure that have helped farmers boost their incomes. He urged the international community to prioritize peace and prosperity over conflict, suggesting that funds spent on wars be redirected toward agricultural development.
