Dominican Republic finalizes steps for Open Skies Agreement

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic has officially enacted the “Open Skies” Air Transport Agreement with the United States, marking a significant milestone in its air connectivity. President Luis Abinader announced the achievement via his X account, praising the efforts of the commission led by Tourism Minister David Collado. This agreement, signed on August 2 after two years of negotiations, is expected to revolutionize air travel between the two nations by eliminating restrictions on flight routes and frequencies.

The initiative aims to foster competition in the airline industry, potentially reducing airfare costs and expanding travel options. Dominican travelers will gain access to new U.S. destinations, while American tourists can enjoy more direct routes to the Dominican Republic, boosting tourism and economic activity. This agreement aligns with similar pacts the Dominican Republic has signed with Panama, Brazil, and the Netherlands, promoting travel, trade, and economic growth.

Globally, “Open Skies” agreements have proven beneficial, with studies showing annual gains of $4 billion for travelers and a 15% reduction in airfares.
