Haitian newspaper accuses Abinader of profiting from Haiti

Haiti.- On May 15, Haiti’s leading newspaper Le Nouvelliste published a strong editorial reacting to the May 14 meeting between Dominican President Luis Abinader and former presidents Hipólito Mejía, Leonel Fernández, and Danilo Medina. The editorial criticizes Haitian authorities for their lack of a coherent political strategy toward the Dominican Republic since 2010, contrasting it with Abinader’s unified and strategic approach.
The editorial argues that President Abinader used the high-profile meeting—held at the Ministry of Defense and surrounded by military symbolism—to reinforce his authority and justify tough policies against Haitian migrants. It accuses the Dominican president of seeking legitimacy for actions that may violate international treaties, highlighting ongoing deportations and a growing militarization of the border.
Le Nouvelliste contends that under Abinader, the Dominican Republic has taken the most aggressive stance yet on Haitian immigration, even as it increases exports to Haiti. The piece concludes by criticizing Haitian leaders for failing to develop a national vision, warning that their inaction has allowed the Dominican Republic to become the dominant power on the island of Hispaniola.
Funny — Dominican Republic is a sovereign nation. We have every right to enforce our own laws. Haitian politicians are the laughingstock of the world; no one takes them seriously. The only reason some people even try to help them is because they feel sorry for the situation.
Meanwhile, those same Haitian politicians stay silent while children are being raped, women are being raped and burned alive — and all they seem to care about is trying to make our country look bad. The reality is, everyone knows Haiti’s political class is among the worst in the world. That’s exactly why no serious business or capital investment wants to set foot in that nation.
