Over 9,000 Dominicans granted Spanish citizenship in 2024

Madrid, Spain.- In 2024, a record 252,476 people acquired Spanish nationality, marking a 5.1% increase from the previous year—the highest figure since records began in 2013, according to Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE).

The top countries of origin were Morocco (42,910), Venezuela (35,403), and Colombia (26,224), followed by Honduras, Ecuador, Peru, the Dominican Republic (9,452), Argentina, Bolivia, and Cuba. The majority of those gaining citizenship were women (56%), and the most represented age groups were 30–39 and 40–49. On average, it took five years to obtain citizenship.

Most new citizens (85%) acquired nationality through residence, while 14.4% gained it by choice—mainly younger individuals tied to Spanish parentage or guardianship. Notably, nearly 20% of those who obtained nationality had always lived in Spain, with Venezuela ranking as the second most common country of birth after Spain itself.
