Abinader calls for urgent global action on sargassum crisis

Nice, France.- President Luis Abinader urged world leaders at the United Nations Ocean Conference to recognize the spread of sargassum in the Caribbean as a global emergency. He called on the UN General Assembly to take urgent action, describing the issue as an environmental, economic, and public health crisis that demands a coordinated international response. Abinader highlighted that sargassum has evolved from a seasonal occurrence into a constant threat, with projections indicating that up to one million metric tons could reach Dominican shores this year, affecting biodiversity, tourism, and fishing industries.

He also emphasized the Dominican Republic’s leadership in ocean protection, noting that the country has already preserved 30% of its marine territory and is developing a National Maritime Strategy. Additionally, a free-access National Oceanographic Data Platform is being used by various stakeholders, including fishers and researchers. Abinader underlined the importance of empowering coastal communities and supporting sustainable practices such as aquaculture, responsible fishing, and climate-resilient marine infrastructure.

Abinader warned of the critical state of the oceans, citing the impact of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. He advocated for a fair and ambitious global plastics treaty and urged the swift implementation of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction agreement. He called for increased access to technology and innovation for developing nations, stressing that these are not favors but shared rights. He reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s commitment to ocean sustainability and urged the international community to act now to preserve the ocean for future generations.

Be innovative, and find uses of it like people already have. Always looking for other people to solve the problems of the country.

Consider this: Sargassum is a regional problem, so it requires a regional, coordinated effort to mitigate or resolve it. What’s the benefit of one country fighting it while its neighbors ignore it? I don’t understand your logic here. Explain.

The problem is created by climate change and oceans currents. This only affects a few countries really. Nobody is really going to make an effort cause it’s not really a big issue to
The rest, So instead of complaining about it, what about create companies that will use make use of it, in turn will benefit the country.

And how will you prevent the beaching of the sargassum?

That’s the thing, you can’t stop it from happening, you can only manage it when it reaches the shore.

Unfortunately this is a lost cause. No one will be able to intercept the sargasso before beaching. Damage is done. Things are going to get worst. Ultimately will damage Caribbean tourism!
