Panama offers training to Haitian police

Panama.- The Panamanian government has offered to train Haitian police in urban and border security to help restore peace amid Haiti’s ongoing crisis. President José Raúl Mulino clarified that Panama currently has no plans to send police forces to Haiti, which has rejected such deployments for now.
Mulino told Haitian Presidential Council President Leslei Voltaire that Panama would only deploy police if officially requested by the UN as part of the Blue Helmets peacekeeping mission. Meanwhile, Panama proposed hosting Haitian police for specialized training at its national police and border service academies to better equip them for their security challenges.
The Panamanian president emphasized that training Haitian forces locally would be a more effective way to support Haiti’s peace and democracy efforts, particularly given Panama’s role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
