Dominican Republic elected vice president of the Third UN Oceans Conference

Nice, France.- Yesterday in Nice, France, the Dominican Republic was elected to serve as vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Third United Nations Conference on the Ocean. This election recognizes the country’s leadership in regional ocean issues and its commitment to environmental sustainability. President Luis Abinader and Environment Minister Paíno Henríquez attended the event.

As vice president, the Dominican Republic will chair the plenary session scheduled for Tuesday, a role that will be carried out by the country’s UN Permanent Representative, Wellington Bencosme. During the conference, 13 vice presidencies are assigned to represent different world regions, with the Dominican Republic and Brazil chosen to represent Latin America and the Caribbean.

The conference, which began yesterday and runs through next Friday, aims to conclude with the presentation of commitments and resolutions by participating nations.

It makes one wonder how the RD can attain this respected position when it cannot maintain the Ozama River and its banks free from trash. The Ozama is just one example of many similar plagues afflicting the RD
