Tropical storm Andrea becomes first named Atlantic cyclone of the season

Tropical Storm Andrea officially formed on Tuesday in the Atlantic Ocean, marking the first named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). However, the system is expected to be short-lived and pose no threat to land.

Located between Bermuda and the Azores, Andrea is moving east-northeast at about 17 mph (28 km/h), with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 km/h) and stronger gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center. Forecasters anticipate the storm will weaken Tuesday night and fully dissipate by Wednesday, as environmental conditions become increasingly unfavorable.

No coastal watches or warnings have been issued, and authorities emphasize there is no danger to land. Andrea began as a low-pressure system and is expected to remain over open waters throughout its brief lifespan.

The Atlantic hurricane season, running from June 1 to November 30, is predicted to be more active than average this year, with up to 19 named storms and 10 hurricanes, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Meanwhile, the Pacific season has already seen five cyclones, including Hurricane Erick, which recently made landfall in southern Mexico as a Category 3 storm, causing fatalities and significant damage.
