U.S. Embassy in Haiti responds to UN resolution approval

Haiti.- The U.S. Embassy in Haiti praised UN Security Council Resolution 2793, which creates a new Gang Suppression Force (GSF), responding to statements by Haitian leaders Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and Transitional Presidential Council President Laurent Saint-Cyr. The embassy described the resolution as a “positive step toward restoring basic security in Haiti” and vowed to work with international partners to deploy the force, while urging the rapid establishment of the UN Support Office in Haiti to provide necessary resources.

France also welcomed the resolution, calling it essential to defeat criminal gangs and restore the rule of law, while reaffirming support for Haiti’s National Police and Armed Forces. U.S. UN representative Mike Waltz highlighted that the new mission is five times larger than its predecessor with a strengthened mandate to combat gangs. OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin described the vote as a critical step toward security, credible elections, humanitarian assistance, and sustainable development.

Resolution 2793 was adopted with 12 votes in favor and three abstentions (China, Russia, and Pakistan). It establishes a 12-month mandate for a force of 5,500 troops and police officers, supported by civilian personnel, marking a decisive move to end impunity and strengthen stability in Haiti.
