Iberia CEO: “Merger with Air Europa would improve Dominican Republic’s coverage”
The CEO of Iberia, Javier Sánchez-Prieto, spoke with Diario Libre about the company’s merger with Air Europa and how it would benefit travelers. He explained that the merger would improve coverage for countries like the Dominican Republic, and it was not intended to reduce competitiveness.
Instead, the aim was to create a larger company that could develop the Madrid hub and expand routes and frequencies to all countries. Sánchez-Prieto acknowledged that rising fuel prices were a concern, but being part of a large airline group allowed them to maintain fuel coverage and competitive prices for customers.
Despite the challenges posed by fluctuating fuel prices, he was confident that the company was well-prepared to face them.
This could be good for the flying public of the RD, more destinations and possibly lower fares. Air Europa was having financial problems and secured loans from IAG Group / Iberia with subsequent moves from IAG to acquire AE. This allows Iberia more route coverage and fights off competition from rival international airlines.
