Rise in demand for flights accelerates expansion of airports in the Dominican Republic

The surges in demand for flights to the Dominican Republic are driving a significant expansion of the country’s main airports to meet the changing needs of passengers. To improve customer experience and meet demand, the Puntacana Group is investing $90 million in the Punta Cana International Airport’s B2 terminal, set to be inaugurated in May, and $200 million in the Logistics Center. The additional facilities will increase the terminal’s capacity by 1.5 million passengers. Similarly, Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) invested over RD$1,000 million in the International Airport of the Americas (AILA) to expand and renovate the central atrium, relocate and modernize security and migration services, and optimize border procedures.

According to Víctor Pacheco Méndez, CEO of Arajet, and Mónika Infante, director of Aerodom, there is a need for a new airport in Santo Domingo, which is planned for construction in 2026 or 2027. This second terminal at Las Américas would allow for new frequencies and routes to accommodate more tourists and passengers. The Cibao International Airport has also announced the start of work on the first phase of its expansion project, which includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, roads, external transit accesses, and a parking lot over the next two and a half years.
