Registry for nationality starts Monday at a cost of RD$1.0B

Santo Domingo.- Interior and Police minister José Ramón Fadul on Wednesday announced the start of the National Regularization Plan next Monday in the provinces with the highest migrant populations, at a cost of more than RD$1.0 billion.

He said the process will be carried out in 12 offices of the provincial governors and nine in the Central Electoral Board (JCE), working from 8am to 6pm.

Fadul said he expects the people to start to register, for which he held meetings with representatives of social groups, and government agencies to help in the process, to begin Santo Domingo, San Cristobal, Santiago, La Romana and La Altagracia provinces and the National District.

The official said at least 500,000 people live in the country illegally.

Requirements

He said applicants must demonstrate their roots in the country, such as housing rentals, work contracts, phone bills, payment receipts, and a notarized affidavit from a Neighborhood Board or any other document proving their presence in the country.

He revealed that there are people from as many as 118 countries in the Dominican Republic, of which 98 reside legally. "There are Americans, Colombians, Arabs, Cubans, Central Americans, Chinese, Spaniards, but most are Haitian, and documentation is the problem with Haitians, who don’t have any data."
