Edesur reports electricity disruptions following Hurricane Beryl impact

Santo Domingo.- Edesur, the Dominican Republic’s power utility, has reported disruptions in 42 circuits due to the shutdown of several electricity generating plants, exacerbated by the impact of Hurricane Beryl. This situation has resulted in a deficit of over 900 MW.

The affected generating units include AES Andrés, Siba, Powership Azua KPS 26, Estrella del Mar 3, Macorís 1, Macorís 2, and Macorís 3, according to the Energy Control Center (CCE).

The strong waves in the Caribbean Sea, with massive garbage hauling, have affected the operations of the AES Andrés generator, as well as the regasification capacity at the terminal that supplies natural gas to other generators.

Additionally, due to these same adverse conditions, the Dominican Power Partners (DPP) plant has temporarily reduced its load. And the other generators are switching to alternative fuel to continue supplying electricity to the system.

Edesur Dominicana has swiftly responded with its brigades to resolve distribution network impacts caused by the outages. While direct storm damage in affected provinces has been addressed, Edesur apologizes to customers for any inconvenience and urges patience as generators are restored.

The utility is collaborating closely with generating companies to expedite service restoration. The closures have led to partial shutdowns of 42 Edesur circuits, affecting approximately 25.20% of its customer base.
