Second group of Kenyan police officers deployed to Haiti

Haiti.- A second contingent of 200 Kenyan police officers has departed for Haiti to join the multinational mission authorized by the UN Security Council. This group will reinforce the initial team of 200 officers that arrived on June 25. The deployment aims to support peace efforts in Haiti amid ongoing violence.

Noor Gabow, deputy inspector general of the Kenyan police and mission coordinator, expressed confidence in the officers’ readiness and urged them to honor their commitment to the UN mandate. The officers, who left Nairobi on a UN-chartered plane, come from various police units and have undergone extensive training, including language skills.

The deployment has faced some legal hurdles in Kenya, with the High Court postponing a hearing on a new appeal against the mission until October 7. Despite these challenges, the mission, authorized in October 2023, seeks to assist the Haitian National Police in combating armed gangs that have caused significant violence and instability, with gangs controlling 80% of Port-au-Prince and other regions.
