Italian arrested at Punta Cana Airport with 1kg of suspected drugs

Punta Cana.-  An Italian national attempting to travel to Paris, France, with suspected narcotics in his stomach was arrested at Punta Cana International Airport in La Altagracia province. Agents from the National Directorate of Drug Control (DNCD) and the Specialized Corps of Airport Security (CESAC) detained the 30-year-old man in the immigration area. Upon further inspection, foreign bodies were detected in his digestive tract. He was taken to Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia Hospital, where he initially expelled 33 bags of the substance. Due to concerning symptoms, doctors performed surgery, removing an additional 71 bags, totaling 104 bags with an approximate weight of 1,360 grams of the substance.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office and DNCD are continuing to investigate the failed international drug trafficking operation to determine if others are involved. The bags, suspected to contain cocaine, have been sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) for analysis. Official agencies have increased security and surveillance at airport terminals, successfully intercepting multiple international drug trafficking attempts recently.
