Venezuelan opposition thanks Dominican Republic for support

Santo Domingo.- The campaign team of Edmundo González Urrutia, the main opposition presidential candidate in Venezuela’s recent elections, thanked Dominican President Luis Abinader for advocating transparency in the electoral process. At a press conference in Santo Domingo, Kleber Correa, the campaign’s general coordinator, expressed appreciation for the Dominican government’s concern and the support from the local community.

The official election results declared Nicolás Maduro the winner with just over 51% of the votes. However, the opposition claims that González Urrutia actually received around 73% of the votes and is demanding that the National Electoral Council (CNE) publish the complete results. Following these concerns, Maduro’s government demanded the immediate withdrawal of diplomatic representatives from several countries, including the Dominican Republic.

In response, the opposition’s campaign team called for the Dominican government to address the situation and for support from former Dominican President Leonel Fernández, who observed the elections. They also highlighted the difficulties Venezuelans faced in voting in the Dominican Republic, where only 650 out of 80,000 eligible voters were able to participate, due to stringent residency permit requirements.
