U.S. sanctions former Haitian President Martelly for drug trafficking

Washington.- The U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions on Tuesday against former Haitian President Michel Joseph Martelly (2011-2016) for his involvement in global drug trafficking.

According to a statement from the Treasury Department, Martelly is accused of using his influence to facilitate the trafficking of drugs, including cocaine, into the United States. He is also implicated in money laundering and collaborating with Haitian drug traffickers, as well as supporting various gangs.

The statement highlighted that widespread gang activity and human rights abuses in Haiti have created an environment conducive to drug trafficking, with the country serving as a transit point for illicit drugs entering the U.S.

The Treasury Department also noted that many of Haiti’s political and business elites have long been involved in drug trafficking and have ties to the gangs responsible for the ongoing violence and instability in the country.
