Abinader issues decree to create new Dominican mining company

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader has issued Decree No. 453-24, establishing Empresa Minera Dominicana, S.A. (Emidom), a state-owned entity focused on exploring and exploiting the Dominican Republic’s strategic mining resources, particularly rare earth elements. These minerals are vital for producing advanced technologies, renewable energy, and electronic devices, making their sustainable use crucial for enhancing the country’s technological and energy sovereignty, while also driving economic, scientific, and technological progress.

Emidom’s responsibilities will include executing and coordinating the exploration and exploitation of strategic mineral resources, conducting studies to assess the economic viability of these projects, and managing mining fiscal reserves such as the “Ávila” Mining Fiscal Reserve in Pedernales. Additionally, Emidom will have the authority to negotiate contracts and form alliances with international companies to further these objectives.
