Tanker truck drivers stage wildcat strike, fuel shortages reported

Santo Domingo.- More than 100 soldiers and police have been deployed Tuesday at the fuel supply terminals of the oil refinery REFIDOMSA in several towns, after the tanker truck drivers grouped in the union SACTPA staged a wildcat strike today, to demand a wage hike.

Army soldiers and 45 police agents have been stationed at the refinery’s supply facilities in the southern towns of Haina and Azua, and in Coastal’s, in San Pedro (east).

The Defense Ministry and other State security agencies have heightened security at the fuel facilities, while drivers tried to block access to terminals during the protest, which backed traffic at REFIDOMSA and disrupted the supply of fuels nationwide.

Local media report that gas and diesel ran out in some stations in various parts of the country.
