Leonel Fernández criticizes Tax Reform as burden on vulnerable sectors
Santo Domingo.- Former President Leonel Fernández has sharply criticized the tax reform proposal from President Luis Abinader’s government and the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), arguing that it disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable sectors. In a post on his X account, Fernández referred to the proposal as a “fiscal bombshell,” asserting that the poorest and middle-class citizens would bear the majority of the tax burden.
The proposal has ignited significant debate within political and economic circles, with social groups urging a comprehensive review of the measures before they are implemented.
It is true the tax reform will be a burden on the poor and middle class. However, the past president did little or nothing to relieve the population of taxes. He is calling for the present leadership to do what he should have done.
Tax reform is needed. However, it should be done fairly across the board in a manner not to assault the poor or the middle class.
