Ex-President Iván Duque praises Abinader’s leadership in Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo.- Former Colombian President Iván Duque, now Coordinator of the Freedom and Democracy Group, praised the Dominican Republic as a significant example of freedom in the region. He highlighted President Luis Abinader’s recent enactment of a constitutional reform limiting re-elections, noting it as a powerful commitment to democracy, contrasting it with the political dynamics seen elsewhere. Speaking at the 7th Regional Meeting 2024 in Santo Domingo, organized by the Center for Public Policy Analysis (CAPP), Duque emphasized the Dominican government’s dedication to fiscal responsibility, infrastructural development, and a transformative public security reform.
President Abinader, addressing the event, underscored the potential of regional integration among Ibero-American countries as a means to tackle socio-economic disparities. He expressed that collaborative efforts would create a stronger market, enhancing investments in key areas such as education, health, and infrastructure.
The event gathered Latin American former presidents, including Mariano Rajoy of Spain, Mauricio Macri of Argentina, and Felipe Calderón of Mexico, as well as ministers and public figures, to discuss political, economic, and social challenges and propose strategies for reinforcing democratic governance in the region.
