The country reports 154 maternal deaths in the first 11 months of this year

National Territory – In the first 11 months of this year, the country registered 154 maternal deaths, of which 82 correspond to Dominican mothers and 72 to Haitian mothers.

This year, maternal mortality figures reflect a reduction of 19% compared to the same period in 2023, when the epidemiological surveillance system reported 190 cases of deaths classified as maternal.

The epidemiological bulletin corresponding to week number 48, which covers the data until November 30, reports that in that last week, maternal death was registered in a 31-year-old woman, resident in the province of Santo Domingo, in the puerperium stage.

The Ministry of Public Health stresses that maternal and newborn health are interlinked and that it is vital that trained professionals attend all births, as timely intervention can make the difference between life and death for both mother and newborn.

It indicates that complications such as postpartum hemorrhage, infections, and preeclampsia can be prevented with proper care.

Highlights the efforts being made to reduce maternal mortality but recognizes that there is still work to be done and stresses the need to continue to improve surveillance, optimize the quality of care in obstetrics and gynecology, train health personnel, and ensure universal access to antenatal services, care during childbirth and postnatal care, especially for the most vulnerable populations.

30% less

Regarding infant mortality, the report highlights that in epidemiological week 48, 28 infant deaths were reported, which brings the cumulative to 1,969 so far this year, which represents a decrease of 30% compared to 2023.

Of these deaths, it points out that 82%, that is, 1,605, were neonatal deaths, occurring in infants less than 28 days of age.

Public Health stresses that it continues prioritizing maternal and child surveillance to prevent complications and ensure quality care in prenatal services, childbirth, and child care.

In addition, it focuses on improving data collection and access to health services in vulnerable communities to reduce maternal and infant mortality.
