U.S. tariff proposal threatens Dominican mining exports
Santo Domingo.- Donald Trump’s proposal to impose a 10% tariff on Dominican exports to the U.S. could significantly impact key sectors of the Dominican economy, particularly mining, according to Martín Valerio, executive director of the Dominican Republic’s Mining and Petroleum Chamber (CAMIPE).
Valerio warned that the new tariffs would raise the cost of Dominican minerals such as gold, ferronickel, and copper in the U.S. market, potentially disrupting regional supply chains and weakening the country’s foreign exchange earnings. He emphasized that gold, in particular, has long played a central role in supporting the Dominican economy.
In response, CAMIPE has proposed a three-pronged strategy: engaging in proactive trade diplomacy with Washington, diversifying export markets, and enhancing competitiveness through innovation and sustainability. Valerio also commended President Luis Abinader’s swift action in dispatching a delegation to the U.S. for talks and expressed CAMIPE’s readiness to support the government in implementing this strategic approach.
