The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, yesterday made an extensive tour of the land border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, accompanied by the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre.

A communication indicates that the activity extended from the province of Pedernales to Manzanillo, covering the main surveillance and control points, to verify the general situation on the border and learn firsthand about the actions coordinated by Dominican State institutions.

During the tour, the text states that details were presented on the operations carried out by the Armed Forces in the areas of perimeter security, the fight against illicit trafficking of goods and people, and the protection of national sovereignty.

According to the document, information was also provided on the coordinated efforts with the General Directorate of Immigration and Customs, aimed at strengthening immigration controls, improving the traceability of goods, and ensuring safe and regulated border flow.

Fernández Onofre praised the visit as very positive, noting that the OAS’s presence on the ground confirms the international community’s commitment to the responsible monitoring of border issues.

“For our Armed Forces, this tour represents an opportunity to transparently demonstrate the daily work we do to protect our border, but also to strengthen regional cooperation in an increasingly challenging environment,” said the Minister of Defense.

For his part, Albert Ramdin said the visit allows him to directly observe the challenges and progress made, noting that the OAS maintains a firm commitment to Haiti’s stability and security in the region.

He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between neighboring countries to maintain an orderly, regulated, and peaceful flow of people, stressing that both Haiti and the Dominican Republic must continue to work towards this goal.

Ramdin expressed his gratitude to the Dominican Republic for organizing this important visit, which allowed him to witness the situation on the border firsthand and strengthen the ties of cooperation between the country and the OAS.
