Cotoperí Solar begins supplying clean energy
Santo Domingo.- ACCIONA Energía has announced the start of operations at Cotoperí Solar, the largest photovoltaic complex in Central America and the Caribbean, located in La Romana, Dominican Republic. With a total capacity of 162.6 MWp, the complex comprises three solar plants that will generate 286 GWh of clean electricity annually—enough to power approximately 166,000 homes—and will reduce CO₂ emissions by over 210,000 tons per year, the equivalent of planting 5.5 million trees.
The project has brought a notable economic boost to the region, employing over 600 people during its construction phase. ACCIONA Energía holds a 51% stake in the initiative, while the remaining 49% is owned by Cotosolar Holding, a consortium that includes the JMMB Sustainable Energy Fund (FES), Grupo Pais, and other investors.
Cotoperí Solar marks ACCIONA Energía’s second major solar venture in the Dominican Republic, following the successful completion of the 58 MWp Calabaza I plant in 2023. The company is also developing the Pedro Corto solar facility (82.69 MWp), again partnering with Grupo Pais.
Beyond energy, ACCIONA and its foundation acciona.org have partnered with the Dominican Ministry of Energy and Mines to expand access to sustainable energy in vulnerable communities. In collaboration with Centro Arcoíris, they are also advancing water and sanitation projects in Bajos de Haina, set to benefit more than 4,500 residents.
