Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, through the National Directorate of Monumental Heritage and in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of San Gregorio de Nigua, has unveiled the results of a technical study on the historic Boca de Nigua sugar mill. This initiative is part of a broader 3D scanning and modeling project that supports the site’s candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status.
The study was conducted with academic backing from Georgia Tech, Auburn University (USA), and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain). Beyond bolstering the UNESCO nomination, the research seeks to define scientific criteria for conservation and to produce educational materials that highlight the monument’s cultural and historical importance.
Initial findings revealed serious structural damage to the mill’s roof, prompting the start of restoration work under Law No. 318-68. For safety reasons, public access to the site has been temporarily restricted. More information is available on the Ministry’s official website: www.cultura.gob.do.

This site is crying to be visited. It is worth stepping into. Its environment provides feelings and education a book or video cannot accomplish.
