NHC forecasts Storm Erin will veer away from Puerto Rico

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported this Wednesday that Tropical Storm Erin, which may become the season’s first major hurricane as early as tomorrow, could shift northward and move away from Puerto Rico.

In its latest advisory, the NHC narrowed the storm’s cone of uncertainty, reducing the likelihood of a direct impact on Puerto Rico. Still, the agency cautioned that Erin “could come close enough to the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico over the weekend to cause some impact,” though the severity remains uncertain.

Erin, which formed Monday west of Cape Verde, is currently a tropical storm with maximum winds of 85 km/h, moving west at 28 km/h, and located about 1,961 km east of the Leeward Islands. Strengthening is expected starting tomorrow.
