Abinader announces humanitarian aid for Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader announced that the Dominican Republic has begun sending humanitarian aid to Caribbean nations impacted by Hurricane Melissa, starting with Jamaica and extending to Cuba and Haiti in the coming days.

Speaking during his weekly program LA Semanal con la Prensa on Monday, Abinader said the first shipment of aid to Jamaica has already arrived by air, while additional supplies are being transported by sea. He also confirmed that he authorized assistance to Cuba and that coordination efforts are underway to support Haiti. The Ministry of Defense, which is leading the operation, will release a detailed report by Thursday outlining the types and amounts of aid sent.

The president added that the Dominican Embassy in Jamaica remains in close contact with the approximately 2,200 Dominicans living there, many of whom work in tourism and construction. Working with the airline Arajet, the government is arranging to repatriate those who request assistance, though the exact number of returnees has not yet been determined.
