New measures announced to control Haitian motorcycle access to Dajabón

Dajabón.- Authorities and merchants in Dajabón met with Haitian representatives and cargo motorcycle operators to discuss new regulations governing the entry of Haitian motorcycles into the Dominican Republic. The measures, which take effect in January, aim to organize cross-border traffic and ensure compliance with legal and safety requirements.

Mayor Santiago Riverón explained that only motorcycles meeting legal standards—such as having insurance and registration—will be allowed to cross. Entry will be staggered by groups to avoid congestion, and Haitian vehicles will be permitted to circulate freely only within a designated tolerance zone near the Border Market. Those traveling beyond authorized areas without permission will face detention and fines.

Freddy Morillo, president of the Federation of Merchants of the Border Market, emphasized that the regulations are intended to maintain order and facilitate commerce. He detailed that motorcycles entering Dajabón must have insurance, and those wishing to access the city center must obtain official permits marked by colored emblems issued by the municipal council. Committees on both sides of the border will coordinate to ensure the smooth implementation of these new rules.

Insurance and registration on all motorcycles within the Dominican Dajabon tolerance zone. Got it, great idea. For everyone, for every motorcyle. regardless of origin. Haitian , Dominican, Legality and safety first. Because we care about our people, all our people. The rest of the country (outside the Tolerance zone) can just drive drunk at night without lights or helmet, carrying a family of 6 & a leaky propane tank on a 100cc deathtrap while smoking a cigar and talking on the cellphone, This we can tolerate, good plan !!

You are saying there’s chaos everywhere in DR with the drivers of vehicles, of course there’s is , but there’s more chaos on the other side of the island, so the politicians should let more chaos in . The worst taxi drivers I experienced in the US were mostly Haitians .
