Traffic speeds up by 30% in Santo Domingo under RD Se Mueve initiative

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Transportation Cabinet announced that the RD Se Mueve plan has completed over 70% of its first phase, resulting in up to a 30% improvement in average travel speeds across key road corridors in Greater Santo Domingo. The update was presented by Transport Cabinet Coordinator and Minister Deligne Ascención, who emphasized that these advances mark significant progress in traffic management, supervision, and the integration of the public transport system, helping create safer and more efficient mobility in the capital.

Authorities highlighted that the first stage of the plan has led to measurable results, including 20–30% faster travel times during peak hours. The initiative has introduced several key measures, such as flexible working hours in 137 public institutions benefiting 70,000 employees, optimization of traffic lights in 11 main corridors, new turning restrictions, contraflow lanes, and regulated parking in high-traffic areas.

Additionally, over 700 DIGESETT agents equipped with body cameras have reinforced traffic control, resulting in more than 5,200 towed vehicles and 7,100 citations for violations. The Metro system has also expanded its operational capacity to reduce wait times and improve service. The government reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the RD Se Mueve plan by incorporating more technology, education, and road safety initiatives to build a modern, well-organized city.

Has there been a poll of the public’s opinion of an improvement? Doubt the 30% figure has any substance because the authors are government and would be biased. A poll from an unprejudiced independent source would be more believable.

There is a notable improvement in traffic in Santo Domingo. Primarily from moving government working hours to 7 am to 3 pm. The completion of the KM 9 project and the new tunnel in Nov 6 are also helping as well.
