Dominican Republic elected to OPANAL Council for the first Time

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic has been elected for the first time to the Council of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) for the 2026–2029 term.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mirex) emphasized that the country has supported OPANAL for nearly six decades, recognizing its role in promoting international peace and strengthening regional security—key pillars of Dominican foreign policy.

As one of the founding signatories of the 1967 Treaty of Tlatelolco, the Dominican Republic now aims to advance initiatives that deepen technical and political cooperation among member states and to contribute actively to the Council’s decision-making process.

The election took place on November 13, 2025, during the XXIX General Conference in Mexico City. Representation on the Council will be shared between the Dominican Ministry of Defense (MIDE) and the Dominican Embassy in Mexico.
