Citizens report large holes in Dominican–Haitian border wall

Dajabón.- Travelers crossing the border area in Dajabón have reported finding at least six large holes in the wall that separates the Dominican Republic from Haiti. The openings are located between the old and new customs checkpoints, sparking concern among those who frequently use the route.

Photos submitted by citizens show that the holes are wide enough for individuals to pass through with ease. In addition to enabling unauthorized crossings, the breaches also make it possible for goods to enter and leave the country irregularly.

Up to this moment, authorities have not released an official response regarding the damage to the border structure.

Key Facts

The border between RD and Haiti runs nearly 392 km. The government of RD started building a “smart border wall” in 2022. The structure includes a concrete base and a metal fence, and — in more secure sections — it is reinforced with surveillance technology.

By late 2024 the first phase was reported at ~ 84 % complete, with delivery projected early 2025.

Purpose & Government Rationale

The official goal is to better control irregular migration, drug/arms trafficking, human trafficking and smuggling.
Additionally, authorities say the wall helps protect farms and livestock from cross-border theft — in some areas, local ranchers reportedly saw a ~80% drop in theft after the wall’s installation.

The border is a sieve. One has to take note the report of the holes came from citizens, not the military charged with protecting the border. So, all the visits from generals to high politicians who speak of how well the border situation is, is nothing more than hot air.
