OAS highlights Dominican Republic as Latin America’s leader in press freedom

Punta Cana.- During the inauguration of the 81st General Assembly of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), the Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Laura Gil, praised President Luis Abinader and his administration for achieving the highest level of press freedom in Latin America, according to the most recent Reporters Without Borders index.

Gil noted that this recognition reflects the Dominican government’s strong commitment to promoting a free and responsible press. She emphasized that trust and credibility remain essential pillars of both journalism and multilateralism, pointing out that neither field is built on power, but rather on truth and integrity. “The media depend on their credibility in society,” she said, adding that journalism and multilateralism share the goal of fostering understanding—within societies and among nations.

The OAS representative concluded that truth and cooperation are not mere ideals but necessary tools for progress and democracy. The IAPA’s 81st General Assembly, held in Punta Cana, gathered editors, journalists, and media executives from across the Americas to address key issues affecting journalism today, including press freedom, the sustainability of media organizations, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence on the profession.
