Study: 107 small hydro-electrics can safely power 6,800 rural homes

Mini hydroelectric plant in Pakistan

Santo Domingo.- At least 6,800 rural households would have safe electric power if the 107 small hydroelectric plants identified by Santo Domingo Technology Institute (INTEC) researchers in Dominican Republic’s numerous river basins were fully operational.

The team of engineers obtained the figures from a nationwide survey of the waterfalls and sources of hydroelectric potential.

They determined that power turbines lower than 5 MW could be harnessed, based on their identification by a geographic and geo-referenced information system.
