Social Security marks 17 years with a US$14.6B nest egg

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Social Security System (SDSS) marks its 17th year with of 7.6 million affiliated Dominicans covered with a health service.

moreover, the system has accumulated around RD$730.0 billion (US$14.6 billion) in its 15 years of operations, with annual growth as high as 12%, Social Security (TSS) treasurer Henry Sahdalá affirmed Wed.

He noted however, that that broad coverage isn’t proportional to the portfolio of services for members, as the system doesn’t cover certain health events.

The anniversary also sparks talk of amending Law 87-01 to, among the measurers to bolster the Social Security Treasury (TSS) to give it legal status and financial autonomy, and ability to punish those at fault.

“On the 17th anniversary of the promulgation of Law 87-01, the system has 4 million members in the Contributive Regime and 3.5 million in the Subsidized. The goal is to reach 90% in 2020 and continue with the gradual incorporation of the population, guaranteeing more and better benefits, “said National Social Security Council (CNSS) manager Rafael Pérez Modesto.

For his part Health and Occupational Risk (SISALRIL) superintendent Pedro Luis Castellanos, ntes that wile Social Security has been a success, it must continue moving forward to lower the cost for affiliates.
