Fernandez and Martelly to launch plan to fight cholera

Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic will launch Wednesday a strategic plan of action to speed up the eradication of the cholera outbreak affecting the country and neighboring Haiti.

According to health minister Bautista Rojas, the initiative will involve the Dominican government through the Public Health Ministry, the Haitian authorities, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as cooperation agencies, non-governmental and international organizations.

The event will place in the National Palace’s Salon de Las Cariatides (Cariatides Hall) at 9:00 am, with the presence of President Leonel Fernandez and his Haitian counterpart Michel Martelly.

"The the joint work of the Haitian and Dominican authorities has the goal of making cholera no longer endemic to the island of Hispaniola in the short to medium term," Bautista Rojas pointed out.
