Dominican eye doctor in Medicare ‘fraud’ ready to leave jail: AP

West Palm Beach, Florida.- Dominican-American eye doctor Salomon Melgen, being held on charges of Medicare fraud, could make bail Thursday, according to prosecutors quoted by AP.

Melgen could leave jail Thursday, but authorities would restrict visits to his home and his movements.

Prosecutors have reportedly reached a tentative agreement with Melgen’s attorneys. The ophthalmologist also faces charges of corruption and bribery together with senator Robert ‘Bob’ Menendez (NJ-D).

AP also reports that prosecutors and Melgen’s lawyers reached agreement on the terms for bail in the Medicare case, including the handover of US$18.0 million in bonds. The ophthalmologist has pleaded not guilty in both cases.

Although some minor issues remained unresolved, the hearing slated for Thursday before US federal court judge James Hopkins, could result in Melgen’s release on bond.

“As part of the agreements, Melgen and his family have had to submit a list of all real estate and other property and financial data on each of the family members, including their property and funds in cash in the Dominican Republic,” AP says, adding that the doctor has spend 11 weeks behind bars.
