Five killed as police chased gunmen in central town

Cotui, Dominican Republic.- Five people killed and several hurt in a police chase of robbers Sun. night, reported local National Police spokesman Alfredo Gomez.

He said the victims were Escarlín Mejía (El Barbero) and his wife Ana Belkis Batista, both 20, and the alleged robbers Frank Joseph Capellán and Carlos Santos, while the fifth victim is an unidentified Haitian national.

The police said the robbers killed the couple in their business in the town La Cueva de Cevicos, from where the police gave chase.

In the shootout with police, Capellán and Santos were killed while traveling in a vehicle on the Cotuí-Cevicos road.

The Police said the bodies and the injured were taken to a local hospital.
