Woman arrested in phishing scam investigation

Santo Domingo.- Police agents from the Department of Investigation of High-Tech Crimes and Crimes (DICAT), part of the Central Investigation Directorate (DICRIM), have apprehended a woman in the municipality of Pedro Brand, Santo Domingo. She was found to be a beneficiary of RD$ 77,931, obtained through a scam known as “Phishing” against a citizen in the municipality of Cotuí, Sánchez Ramírez.

The arrested individual is Smaylin Berroa Lorenzo, against whom arrest warrant No. 352-2024-AJ-000166 was issued. Her arrest took place on the Duarte Vieja highway in Pedro Brand.

According to the police report, DICAT agents responded to the complaint filed by the victim of the “Phishing” scam. This scam involves social engineering techniques employed by cybercriminals to fraudulently obtain confidential information from users and steal their identity.

Cybercriminals typically use fake emails as bait to extract passwords and other valuable personal data from unsuspecting individuals.

The detained individual will be handed over to the Public Ministry for further legal proceedings.
