Customs body scanners detect attempt to smuggle 74 high-end cell phones

Santo Domingo.- The General Directorate of Customs (DGA) has reported its first major success using body scanners installed in July at Las Américas International Airport (AILA) and other terminals across the country. The scanners detected an attempt to smuggle 74 high-end cell phones, with 32 hidden in hand luggage and 42 strapped to the legs and stomach of a passenger.

The discovery was made through non-intrusive screening using Bodyscan technology, which immediately activated security protocols. Customs emphasized its continued commitment to combating the smuggling of illicit goods and protecting national security.

The scanners, currently in use at international airports in Las Américas, Punta Cana, Cibao, and Puerto Plata, employ thermal cameras to detect concealed objects without physical searches. They were certified by the National Energy Commission (CNE) to ensure safety and compliance with health standards.
