Customs director highlights Tax Reform as Abinader’s long-term legacy

Santo Domingo.- The Director General of Customs, Eduardo Sanz Lovatón, emphasized that the new fiscal modernization reform is part of President Luis Abinader’s vision to create a lasting legacy for the Dominican Republic. According to Sanz Lovatón, this is the first tax reform in the country’s history to incorporate progressive elements, moving beyond merely expanding the existing tax on industrial goods and services (ITBIS).

He stated that the proposed reform aims to ensure inclusivity and is designed to have room for improvement, acknowledging that it may have flaws. However, it represents a significant shift in the economic approach by focusing on a more equitable distribution of tax contributions.

Sanz Lovatón highlighted that the government is asking wealthier Dominicans to contribute more to enhance the nation’s tax system, aiming to create a more balanced and fair fiscal structure that can benefit the society for generations to come.
