Migration reports repatriation of 18,848 Haitians

Santo Domingo.- In the first days of October, the General Directorate of Migration (DGM) deported and repatriated 18,848 Haitians found in the Dominican Republic without proper documentation. Of this number, 16,893 were repatriated after an operation that began on October 3. These actions, conducted with the support of the Armed Forces and National Police, highlight the operational capacity of state agencies. The DGM emphasized that these deportations were carried out according to Law 285-04 and in line with international conventions, ensuring respect for human rights.

In response, Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) called on the Dominican Republic to uphold its international commitments, urging an end to what it described as “brutal and racist” deportation practices. The CPT specifically referenced the 1999 repatriation protocol between the two nations and other international agreements, which dictate that the Dominican Republic has the right to repatriate undocumented Haitian citizens but must respect human rights and prevent the separation of families.

Haiti further reported irregularities in the deportation process, claiming numerous cases of abuse documented by various institutions. The CPT urged the Dominican government to address these issues in compliance with established agreements.
