National Revisory Assembly approves constitutional amendments

Santo Domingo.- The National Revisory Assembly has approved key constitutional amendments, including changes to several articles and transitional provisions. These changes impact the presidential election process, including a clause that bars the president elected in May 2024 from ever seeking re-election or running for vice president. The session, attended by 190 out of 222 assembly members, was led by Assembly President Ricardo de los Santos.

Among the significant modifications is the revision of Article 209, which confirms that presidential, vice-presidential, legislative, and municipal elections will take place every four years on the third Sunday of May. The transitional provision prohibits the future reelection of the president elected in 2024. Other amendments include Article 268, which reaffirms that constitutional reforms cannot alter the civil, republican, and democratic form of government, nor affect presidential election rules.

Several additional amendments were made to articles concerning elected officials’ terms, the functions of the Attorney General, and the composition of the National Council of the Judiciary. These changes aim to enhance the democratic process and governance structure, ensuring clear guidelines for the election, replacement, and responsibilities of public officials.
