Opción Democrática calls for protest at Congress against Tax Reform

Santo Domingo.- Opción Democrática criticized the proposed tax reform, labeling it as harmful to Dominican families and detrimental to household economies. Virginia Antares, the party’s former presidential candidate, invited citizens to join a protest against the reform in front of the National Congress, emphasizing that alternative measures should be prioritized before increasing taxes.

Antares highlighted the need to audit the public debt, which amounts to $57,600 million as of August 31, and questioned how these funds were spent. She argued that the government should reduce regressive consumption taxes and instead focus on progressive taxes targeting large properties and wealth. Additionally, Antares called for addressing tax evasion, formalizing the economy through a single tax system, and improving tax administration efficiency—objectives she claimed the current proposal fails to achieve.
