FP welcomes Abinader’s withdrawal of fiscal reform, as requested by Leonel Fernandez

Santo Domingo – The Fuerza del Pueblo (PF) party welcomed the decision of the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, to withdraw the tax reform bill, a measure that had been requested by former president and leader of the organization, Leonel Fernandez.

In a statement issued tonight, the PF said: “We welcome the fact that the President of the Republic decided to withdraw the fiscal reform bill submitted to the National Congress, which did not have the necessary consensus at the national level.”

The party pointed out that the reform proposal, described as a “fiscal bombshell” by the leader of the opposition, would have generated a negative impact on the national economy. Faced with the widespread rejection by Dominican society, Leonel Fernandez asked President Abinader to reconsider his position and withdraw the reform, thus opening the possibility of a broad and constructive debate that would allow a consensus to be reached.

“With this withdrawal, it will now be possible to move forward in compliance with Law No. 1-12 on the National Development Strategy, which establishes the need for a progressive fiscal reform, and not regressive as the one initially proposed by the PRM government,” the PF communiqué concluded.
