Copardom warns of alarming road accident rates in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Laura Peña Izquierdo, president of the Employers’ Confederation of the Dominican Republic (Copardom), voiced concern about the nation’s alarming rate of road accidents, which ranks the highest globally with 65 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to World of Statistics. Speaking at the opening of the XXII Copardom 2024 Congress on Occupational Risk Prevention, she emphasized the risks employers and employees face due to hazardous road conditions and called for collaboration between the public and private sectors to address the issue.

Peña Izquierdo also highlighted the high number of workplace accidents occurring during employees’ commutes, noting that 65% of such incidents in 2024 were travel-related, according to Idoppril. She stressed the need for improved safety measures within companies and endorsed the modernization of the Labor Code to enhance business competitiveness. The event featured discussions on occupational safety, artificial intelligence, sustainability, and managing psychosocial risks in disruptive work environments.
