Danilo Medina denies seeking reinstatement: “I never spoke with the PRM about it”

Santo Domingo.- Former President Danilo Medina denied on Sunday afternoon that he had proposed any agreement to the ruling party to reinstate his eligibility for re-election through constitutional reform, as claimed by President Luis Abinader in a recent speech. The statements were reported by Diario Libre.

Medina’s remarks came in response to Abinader’s comments, in which the current president said: “By rejecting political negotiations or convenience, we reaffirm that anyone who was already elected in 2016 will not be allowed to run again.”

Addressing these statements, the leader of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Medina, clarified: “Firstly, I have never spoken with the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) to reinstate my eligibility because I have no interest in doing so. Secondly, it is not true that President Abinader is the first to impose term limits, because I was the first to do so.”

Medina also emphasized that the transitory article preventing him from running for office again was a provision he himself dictated to the President of the Senate, Reinaldo Pared Pérez (now deceased).

Medina to remain as president of the PLD for four more years

The Central Committee (CC) of the PLD has re-elected Danilo Medina as the party’s president for a second consecutive term, with 67.33% of the votes.

Francisco Domínguez Brito, the only other candidate running against Medina, received 32.67%.

In terms of votes, Medina secured support from 882 members, while Domínguez garnered 428 votes.
