COE increases alert levels in 27 provinces due to heavy rain forecast

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) has expanded its alert to cover 27 provinces due to expected heavy rains linked to a low-pressure trough. Fifteen provinces, including Santo Domingo, the National District, and Santiago, are on green alert, indicating the need for precautionary measures. Twelve others, such as Puerto Plata and Maria Trinidad Sanchez, are on a heightened yellow alert, signaling increased flood and landslide risks.

According to the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET), affected regions will experience heavy cloud cover, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, particularly in areas along the coast. Maritime warnings are in place for the Atlantic, where waves could reach up to nine feet, prompting INDOMET to advise small and medium-sized vessels to remain in port.

Residents in high-risk areas should stay alert, avoid crossing rivers or streams, and follow guidance from civil protection agencies. The COE and INDOMET continue to monitor conditions closely to prevent flooding and ensure public safety.
