Heavy rains displace thousands in Puerto Plata
Santo Domingo.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has reported that over 11,300 residents in Puerto Plata have been displaced due to severe rainfall, with 2,260 homes affected. This crisis has led to a red alert for Puerto Plata, while five provinces are under yellow alerts and twelve others under green alerts, signaling risks of flash floods, river overflows, and landslides.
The adverse weather, fueled by remnants of a weakened frontal system and northeasterly winds, is expected to persist. Authorities warn of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, especially in the Atlantic coast, Central Mountain Range, and northeastern regions. Efforts are underway to monitor the situation and provide assistance to impacted communities.
Residents are advised to avoid areas near rivers, streams, and ravines, as well as refrain from using swimming pools under current conditions. The COE emphasizes the importance of adhering to emergency guidelines to minimize risks, as they continue to support displaced individuals and coordinate recovery efforts.
