Taíno Cultural Center hosts discussion on Casabe as World Heritage
Santo Domingo.- The Taíno Cultural Center Casa del Cordón, an initiative of Banco Popular Dominicano, hosted the discussion “El Casabe: Culinary Legacy of the Taínos. World Heritage”, bringing together historians, gourmets, and cultural enthusiasts to highlight the significance of this staple food in Dominican identity. The event celebrated UNESCO’s recent recognition of casabe as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity for its role in social cohesion and sustainable development.
Speakers included Bolívar Troncoso, president of the Sabores Dominicanos Foundation; anthropologist Rafael Puello; and casabe artisan Cándida Castillo “Mechi.” They emphasized casabe’s historical importance beyond sustenance, showcasing the ancestral wisdom of the Taínos in utilizing natural resources sustainably.
The discussion, the fourth event hosted by Casa del Cordón since its opening in November 2024, reinforced the center’s role as a hub for cultural reflection. Visitors can explore the center in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. More details are available at www.casadelcordon.com and on Instagram @casadelcordon.
